after Diebenkorn was written for a concert celebrating an exhibition of Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series of paintings. The composition was inspired by Ocean Park #79 in particular, though it is by no means a literal interpretation. In the music as in the painting, clarity and regularity of structure are constantly questioned – even undermined – by a shifting, unstable, multi-layered surface. The close-up view (in musical terms, the moment) can suggest an entirely different work than the large-scale form.
